Geography
The subject aims to stimulate learners’ interest in and engagement with the world. Through geographical enquiry they develop an understanding of the interaction between people, places and environments in order to become informed, responsible and active citizens.
Population studies; Mapwork; Geomorphology (understanding rocks of our area, volcanoes and earthquakes); the atmosphere and climate (understanding daily weather).
Geography can lead to tertiary studies in the humanities or sciences. It supports a wide range of career fields. Examples are: town and regional planning; architecture and landscaping; tourism; geology and engineering; weather forecasting; GIS; conservation.
The subject at school has a strong practical component. This includes field trips and the use computers and Geographical Information Systems for research projects.

History
Whilst promoting an appreciation of history, the subject aims to develop a variety of valuable life skills. These include the ability to do research, to analyse evidence, to think critically, to appreciate the causes and effects of events and to communicate effectively through essay writing.
In grade 10 topics include: slavery and abolition movements; the Ming dynasty; the French revolution; Shaka and the Mfekane and the Anglo – Boer war.
Skills taught in History (for example essay writing and evaluating evidence from various sources) will be useful for tertiary studies in any subject. Career fields for which the subject should be beneficial include law, education, the diplomatic corps, politics, museums, archaeology, journalism and tourism.
