2009 Swimming Season:

swimmingThe 2009 team has emulated the successful 2008 swimmers. Selborne achieved a full house of shields and trophies on the Border which has now been achieved four times since 1998.

2009 has not been as frustrating a season regarding ‘clashes’ – other galas and sports taking place at the same time. However, the Athlone Shield Gala in King William’s Town took place on the same day as the Jason Murray u14 Water Polo Tournament thus our u14’s were unable to compete. Selborne recorded comfortable wins to retain the Medley Relay and the Athlone Shield (Freestyle Relay), thereby recording another rare ‘double’ at this gala. Selborne results were:

4 x 50m Medley Relay Boys’ Open
1st Place: Joao Felizardo, Brendan Milakhe, Marc Emslie & Christopher Robb

4 x 50m Freestyle Relay Boys’ Open
1st Place: Joao Felizardo, Jason Guess, Justin Sam & Christopher Robb

U16 - 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle
1st Place: Christopher Robb

U16 - 50m Breaststroke
1st Place: Brendan Milakhe and 4th Place: 50m Butterfly

U19 - 50m Freestyle
2nd Place: Jason Guess
4th Place: Marc Emslie

U19 - 50m Backstroke
1st Place: Joao Felizardo

Due to time constraints the Rotary Relay Gala was postponed again this year. At the Amakhosi Gala our swimmers excelled. We gained 16 first places out of 20 individual events, four second places, and won all 10 relays (medley and freestyle). The Individual results were:

U14
Luke Coetzer (1 win); Jedwin Harty (1 win); William Brann (1 win)
U15
Brendan Milakhe (2 wins)
U16
Joshua Kriel (1 win); Jayson Flanagan (1 win)
U17
Vaughan Warren (2 wins); Arron Cresswell (2 wins);
U18
Marc Emslie (1 win); Courtney Higson (1 win); Joao Felizardo (1 win)
(Swimmers were limited to a maximum of two individual events)

In the Nahoon River Mile, William Brann was placed 4th in the u14 section; Vaughan Warren was placed second (silver medal) and Dylan De Wilzen was placed fourth in the u30 section.

The Interhouse Gala was full of fun and the results were: 1st – Fuller, 2nd – Rees, 3rd – Crewe, 4th – Perry and 5th – Malcomess. The Victor Ludoram trophies went to Jedwin Harty (u14), Christoper Robb (u16) and Joao Felizardo (u19).

Those chosen to represent Eastern Cape at the South African Schools’ Gala in Cape Town were Joao Felizardo, Justin Sam, Jean van der Vyver, Christoper Robb and Brendan Milakhe.

At the National Level Three (interclub) Joao received a Bronze Medal for the u18 50m Backstroke.

The following awards wre presented:
Colours: Dylan de Wilzen, Joao Felizardo, Jayson Flanagan, and Kyle Fredenstein.
First Team: Jean van der Vyver.

Many thanks to our water polo players for their outstanding contribution to our success and to the various club coaches and Border Aquatics officials for their invaluable support.
