Results from SA Top Schools Squash Tournament 2010

At the recent 2010 SA Top Schools’ Squash Championships held in Pietermaritzburg over the week-end 16 July to 18 July, Selborne College was the only boy’s school from the Border and EP region to participate against 7 other top squash teams in the country.

To have earned a place in this tournament, is an achievement.  For the second year in succession, Selborne came first.

Teacher Anna O’Connor who has been in charge of Selborne Squash for the last seven years mentioned that the success of the team isn’t something that just happens.  She quoted:  “Success is learned success is practiced and then it is shared”.  Although Selborne was only seeded number three at the tournament, the results were:

Selborne beat Grey College:            6-0
Selborne beat Paarl Boys High        4-2
Selborne beat St Johns                   6-0
Selborne beat Pretoria Boys High     4-0
Selborne beat Rondebosch              4-2

2009 Squash Season:

1stsquashThis year has been the most memorable one for Squash at Selborne College since I have been in charge. The 2009 First Team was not only the most talented we have ever had. What they lacked in skills they more than made up for in commitment, determination, discipline and spirit.

We once again participated in the Top Schools’ Championship Tournament held in Pietermaritzburg and ended up as the overall winners. This has only happened once before in the history of Selborne, 18 years ago. Selborne beat Rondebosch 18-4, Boksburg 20-0, Grey College (Bloemfontein) 17-7, Pretoria Boys’ High 20-6 and Glenwood 14-6. In the last match Michael Wood (ranked SA no. 2) beat the SA no. 1 player and Michael Shean (ranked SA no. 11) beat the SA no. 10 of Glenwood.

There has been strong competition among lower team players to improve their rankings. Selborne entered four teams to play Border A and B league matches. Once again, we won the league. All Derby Day matches were also won by Selborne.

Provincial representatives were:
U19: Hloni Bookholane, Jason Byrne, Jonty Craniey, David Morgan, Michael Shean, Michael Wood
U16: Jevandre Botha, Robin Burger, Jarryd Frauenstein, Ross Pretorius, Jonathon Shean, Joshua van Rooyen
U14: Dylan Billingham, Guy McComb, Craig Morgan, Travis Nicholas

Jason Byrne played in the Scottish Open as well as the British Open against top players of the world and excelled.

Awards presented were:
Honours: Michael Shean & Michael Wood
Colours: Jason Byrne
First Team: Jarryd Frauenstein, David Morgan & Jonathon Shean
Junior: Jevandre Botha, Robin Burger, Ross Pretorius & Joshua van Rooyen

Congratulations to all the dedicated, high-spirited players. Goodbye and thank you to our matrics who have come to end of their school career, Jonty Craniey, Michael Shean and our star no. 1 player and Captain, Michael Wood.

Thank you to Mr Gunn and the parents for their support, especially to those parents who have been overseeing Men’s league matches. The commitment of Mr Paxton, Mr Hanger, Mrs Saayman and Mrs Milwidski have been invaluable. To me, 2009 will always stand out as a goal which has been achieved in the Squash with each player being a worthy bearer of the Selborne tradition upholding it with great credit. Skimilayo!
