Hockey Report – Selborne vs Hudson Park High 23 July

The Xerox Selborne 1st XI were in the unfamiliar position of underdogs against the highly-rated Hudson Park team.  But they rose to the occasion with an outstanding first half performance, which produced a decisive 4-0 lead after only 20 minutes play.  2 field goals by Kyle Maguire in the opening 5 minutes set the tone and these were followed by a field goal from Jarryd Frauenstein, who then also finished a corner variation at the right post.

Hudson Park pulled a goal back just before the break and in the second half had the better of the game as Selborne allowed their standards to slip, turning the ball over far too often.  It was only a number of fine saves by goalkeeper Liam Bassingthwaighte that prevented Hudson from reducing the deficit and enabled Selborne to complete a 4-1 victory, earned by the quality of their first half display.

1st Team Hockey Report vs Grey College

After their 8 hour bus trip, Selborne struggled to settle in the earlier part of the match against their traditional Free State rivals and found themselves 2-0 down after 15 minutes. The first Grey goal was a shot going wide, unfortunately deflected into the goal by a defender, and the second was caused by hesitant defending after a failure to play to the whistle.

Selborne then pulled themselves together and put in a much improved performance for the rest of the match.  The teams were well-matched in midfield and the game was played at an intense pace with chances being created at both ends. There was no further scoring until the closing minutes when Grey added to their tally with a rather soft field goal and Selborne replied with a good finish by Edan Allen after a quick counter-attack to make the final score 3-1 to Grey.

The hockey was of a good standard with Grey having an overall edge, but Selborne should be complimented on recovering from their poor start to compete on even terms for the rest of the match.

Report on the 1st XI Hockey Team:
The Selborne 1st XI came out on top in their first home inter-schools match of the season by beating Kingswood 4-1 in a match that failed to reach great heights. Selborne looked a bit rusty after their holiday break, not having played for over 3 weeks, but were in control for most of the match.  First half goals were scored by Jason van Zyl, set up well by Edan Allen, and Jarryd Frauenstein (2). Kingswood reduced the deficit from a penalty corner just before half-time.

Although Selborne dominated possession in the second half, they did not add to their total until the closing minutes when David Morgan picked up a rebound and finished with a well-struck shot to make the final score 4-1.

Hockey

Selborne College is one of the founder members of the annual Nomads hockey festivals, the most prestigious inter-schools hockey events in South Africa incorporating most of the top hockey schools in the country.  This year, both the 1st and U16A teams acquitted themselves with great credit at Nomads, particularly the unbeaten U16s.

HockeyNomadsAndrewBuckleySelborne 1st Hockey XI  - Nomads Festival at Grey College
Selborne 1st Hockey XI lost to KES                       0 - 1
Selborne 1st Hockey XI beat St John's                   2 - 0
Selborne 1st Hockey XI lost to Maritzburg College   4 - 5
Selborne 1st Hockey XI beat Jeppe                        6 - 2
Selborne 1st Hockey XI beat Glenwood                   4 - 1

The relatively inexperienced 1st team (only 3 squad members from last year) achieved good results with 3 convincing victories over St John’s, Jeppe and Glenwood, and 2 losses by a single goal against the highly rated KES and Maritzburg College teams.  Selborne created more chances than the opposition in all 5 matches, but inaccurate finishing prevented a better outcome in the 2 matches lost. Overall, it was an encouraging performance by this very new team.

Selborne U16A - Nomads Festival at Pretoria Boys' High
Beat Wynberg                         4 - 0
Beat Jeppe                              4 - 0
Beat Maritzburg College            3 - 0
Beat Glenwood                        3 - 0
Beat St John's                         3 - 0
Beat Pretoria Boys                   3 - 0

This was an outstanding record for the U16As, winning 6 out of 6 without conceding a goal, against some of the best hockey schools in the country. The U16A team showed a mature attitude beyond their years in their approach to the event and excelled themselves with 6 wins out of 6, scoring 20 goals with none against.  Features of the team’s display were the solid team defense from front to back (only 4 penalty corners were conceded in 300 minutes hockey), and the lack of reliance on individual stars with everybody contributing to the team effort. This was illustrated by the fact that 8 different players got on the score sheet for the team.
