2009 Rowing Season:

taylor_fam

rowing_dogSelborne College celebrated the 50th Selborne Regatta in 2009 and Kevin Taylor being master-in-charge of rowing for 25 years.

Left: The Taylor Family at the Selborne Rowing Dinner.

This year Selborne hosted the fiftieth Selborne Sprint Regatta, the oldest school regatta in South Africa. To celebrate the occasion, the school held a dinner for Old Boys, Selborne rowing supporters and current senior oarsmen. An old friend of the Rowing Club, Mr Angus Robertson, was the guest speaker. He played a big role in Selborne’s visit to Henley in 1993 and came out each year to officiate at the Selborne and Buffalo Regattas until his retirement from umpiring in 2008. It was certainly a night to remember, meeting the rowing stars of yesterday and many of those who have made a contribution to the well-being of the club over the years. The dinner also marked Mr Taylor’s twenty-fifth year as master-in-charge of Selborne Rowing.

row3Winning the Selborne Shield at this regatta was another highlight of the year as was the performance of Old Selbornian, Murray Chandler, who won the prestigious Silver Sculls in the Buffalo Regatta. He is the third Old Boy to win this race.

The First Four – Dusty Zeisberger (stroke), Darren Venter, Ross Langtree, Ashley Myburgh and Jeshal Jeram (cox) – enjoyed a successful season. Unbeaten in the local regattas, they came second in the Buffalo Regatta, third in the Selborne Sprint and also achieved bronze medals at S A Champs in Pretoria. The 1st Double – Zeisberger and Myburgh – only entered three races, to win at the Eastern Cape Champs and in the Selborne Sprint, and they achieved a third in the inter-provincial doubles.

Michael Burbidge (stroke), Darren Venter, Dusty Zeisberger, Ashley Myburgh, Ross Langtree, Cuan Nicolay, Jason Randall, Jason Dicks and Jeshal Jeram (cox) represented the First Eight and were awarded first team blazers. Their best performances were wins in the Selborne Challenge Eights, where they came from behind to row through St Andrew’s, and in the Eastern Cape Champs. Their third place in the Selborne Sprint and fourth places in the Buffalo and at the SA Schools’ Boatrace were also good results. For his exceptional performance over the past two seasons, Zeisberger, the recipient of the Phil Baisley Trophy for Oarsman of the Year, was awarded full school Honours. Venter, Myburgh, Langtree and Jeram earned Colours for rowing.

The Second Eight – Shawn McLaren (stroke), Bryden Armstrong, Vaughn Guest, Brendon Clack, Dale Eldridge, Francois de Klerk, Guy Coulson, Kaden Bruce, Royden Weyer and Sazi Ntuli – had an exceptional year in which they were unbeaten until S A Champs where they came second in the Second Eights race. It took a special effort from the whole club to win the Selborne Shield on this historic occasion. The following crews did well to win in the Selborne Sprint: First Double and Second Pair of Ross Langtree and Darren Venter, while the following crews won in the Selborne and Buffalo Regattas: Second Eight, Third Four, Fourth Four and Third Eight. Numerous second and third places helped secure this memorable win.

row2This year’s U16 group was an enjoyable age group to coach as they provided stiff competition for crew selections, resulting in multiple crew changes throughout the season. Their internal rivalry and belief in themselves were definitely catalysts in their success during the year. The A8+ and A4+, both stroked by Litha Dweba, did exceptionally well in all the regattas against some very strong competition. The A4+ dominated all the local regattas while both these crews managed 2nd places – the four in the Buffalo Regatta, the eight in the Selborne Sprint. Every year holds its surprises and this year it was the exceptional performances of the C 4+, stroked by Van den Bos, in the B divisions they raced in. The following boys earned junior sport awards: Litha Dweba, Mark Chiu, Damon Leppert, Arthur Niit and Alex van den Bos.

Although the U14 and U15 quads did not win any races in the bigger regattas, they seemed to enjoy their rowing. The U15B Quad, stroked by Hartley did very well to come second in the Buffalo Regatta. Those juniors who went to SA Champs gained valuable experience and their performance was pleasing. At the U14 and U15 age-level, the emphasis is on enjoyment and learning to row correctly, rather than competition. Judging from the very good ergo times by the U15 group, it seems many of these oarsmen will do well in the senior ranks.

Selborne has at last a magnificent gymnasium. Oarsmen are encouraged to make full use of this facility so that they can fulfil their potential. Gym and ergometer training in the off-season is important to increase strength and endurance, as the season is too short to develop significantly in these areas. The gym is a vital part of rowing training if the club is to continue to compete against the best. Gym must become a way of life for all aspirant sportsmen.
The coaches, parents and many friends of Selborne Rowing have continued to provide invaluable support to the club. We are sincerely grateful to all those who coached, maintained our equipment, raised money, helped at regattas, catered at regattas and hosted visitors. We would also like to thank those ex-Selborne oarsmen who made generous donations which will go towards the purchase of a new boat.

mrtaylorIn February  2009 Selborne College celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Selborne Regatta and to celebrate this occasion a special rowing dinner was held. Selborne has a proud tradition in rowing, and we are the oldest school rowing club in South Africa.

Mr Kevin Taylor, Vice-Principal of Selborne College, also reached a milestone in 2009. He has been Master in Charge of Rowing for 25 years. An unbelievable achievement and all our thanks and best wishes go to Kevin for his amazing dedication to Selborne Rowing.
