Selborne College

OSA Vision Statement

selborne3We have over the recent years realized that our role as Old Selbornians has changed and that our responsibility to our old school has become vital in order to maintain the standards of education that we were used to. I think even more importantly is that a legacy is maintained that we can continue to be proud of; as all of us want to belong to something great. In order for this to happen we are going to need to play our part.

I have set out below a plan or vision for us as Old Selbornians, something for us to focus on and be united by. It is imperative that all of us buy into this vision so that we are focused and can put this into action as soon as possible.

I have spoken to Mr. Gunn and we have his full support to grow our capital base. I think with this in mind we need to use this opportunity to get moving and put all of our efforts into this project. We as the Old Selbornian Association Executive committee have registered the Association as a NPO and have therefore created tax benefits for all those who qualify. We would like to be the medium you use for scholarships, donations or anything else you want to do.

The Objective of the Old Selbornian Association:
The OSA Constitution states that the objectives of the OSA are:

  1. To uphold the traditions and further the interest of Selborne College and Primary in their activities.
  2. To maintain contact with its past pupils and the school and to provide a channel of information in both directions about activities, progress and matters of mutual interest.
  3. To promote and regulate social, cultural and recreational activities amongst its members.

The Vision of the Old Selbornian Association:
The vision of the Old Selbornian Association is to make a difference to Selborne College and Selborne Primary by assisting with the people portfolio; which includes the scholars, teachers and staff. We can assist with scholarships, school trips (Sporting, club or academic), assisting with teachers salaries and assisting with professional training/coaching to allow the scholars to reach their full potential in their respective field.

We need to make the difference by looking after the people of Selborne.

Achieving the Vision:
We have identified two vehicles necessary to achieve our vision. Firstly, our monthly expenses need to be covered with our debit order contributions. Secondly, our capital projects will be paid for by fund raising projects.

Capital Projects:

  1. We need a constant source of income to fulfil our vision and we aim to achieve this through the creation of assets, for our purposes the definition of an asset is anything that puts money into our pockets. The income derived from our assets will be used to fund our vision.
  2. We will create assets through the OSA Bumper Bonanza, Once off donations, donations from re-union groups, excess funds from the debit order system, OSA Spit Braai and other fund raising events like golf days.
  3. Our aim is to invest into property and use the income from the property to reach our objectives i.e. we will use the funds raised to pay off the capital asset and use the rental income as a source of perpetual income. We will constantly buy property and pay it off so as to increase our income to achieve our vision. We don’t believe that we should see donations and funds-raised as income but rather as capital which is to be invested in an income generating vehicle.

Debit Order:

  1. We also need to be able to pay our monthly running expenses which will include a salary for a full time OSA Staff member, telephone, ADSL, SMS Service and other administrative costs. We envisage that the expense will be met with the monthly debit order program.
  2. We have targeted a minimum of 200 debit orders of R100-00 per month for this purpose. We currently have 21 Old Selbornians contributing through debit orders.

We as Old Selbornians can make a difference in assisting our schools become great. We need to be focused and united, and for this we need the support of all Old Selbornians.

Thank you for taking time to read this letter and I am sure you agree that we belong to something really special.

Kind Regards
