The class of 2010 produced excellent results in the NSC examinations. Not only was the pass rate 100%, but the quality of the passes was such that 82% of the class passed at the level required for admission to a bachelor’s degree course. The 128 candidates produced an impressive 197 subject distinctions of which 47 were for History, 45 for Life Orientation, 28 for Mathematics, 16 for Mathematical Literacy, 13 for each of Accounting and Physical Science, 9 for each of Life Sciences and Engineering Graphics and Design, 7 for Afrikaans, 2 for each of English and Geography and 1 for Music. There were only 3 subject failures in the entire grade. Subject averages achieved by the class were healthy with History, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation and Music achieving averages over 70% and 6 other subjects achieving averages over 60%.
Special mention must be made of the outstanding History results where 57% of the class achieved distinctions. The performance in Mathematics where 40% of the class achieved distinctions is also noteworthy. 44 Selbornians (5 of them with distinction) also passed the additional optional 3rd Mathematics paper - this is more than the total for the rest of the city and represents more than 10% of the successful candidates in the entire province. The ongoing support of the Optima and Epoch Trusts for our mathematics department must be acknowledged. Their funding makes a small pupil to teacher ratio possible. Physical Science showed pleasing development with a healthy crop of distinctions and a 68% average. Lloyd Balshaw and Vaughan Guest achieved 7 distinctions each, while David Morgan [our top candidate], Kaustav Mitra, Anton Linde and Joshua Linde each achieved 6 distinctions. A further 6 candidates achieved 5 distinctions each.
