1st Hockey XI Match Report
What has been a good season for the Xerox Selborne College 1st XI ended on a disappointing note with a 5-1 loss away to an impressive Grey High team. The final score was a bit misleading, as the run of play was fairly even for the most part, but there is no doubt that the speed and incisiveness of the Grey counter-attacks gave them a vital edge and their victory was well deserved.
After going down 2-0 early in the match, Selborne recovered well and got back into the game with a well-taken goal by Nicholas Koning just before half-time. But Grey took all the opportunities open to them in the second period with some decisive finishing, while Selborne could not put the final touch to their chances at the other end with Grey doing some desparate scrambling in defence.
This defeat should not be allowed to take away the credit due to this Selborne team for their overall results and for the many positive performances they put in during the season as a whole.

Match Report: Selborne College 1st Hockey XI vs Dale College – 5 August 2011
The Xerox Selborne College 1st XI had convincingly beaten Dale College 5-0 earlier in the season, but found the going far more difficult in the return fixture on a freezing Friday night in King William’s Town.
In a keenly-contested match, the home side took the lead in the first half through a quick counter-attack after Selborne had lost the ball in the centre of the field. The tally remained at 1-0 until half-time with neither side able to create many clear-cut scoring opportunities.
In the second period, Selborne had more possession and seemed to have gained the upper hand when Matthew Spanjaard deflected a long pass from Sarvesh Naidoo past the Dale keeper to equalize. With 10 minutes left, Brad Hensberg converted a penalty-corner to put the visitors into the lead. But Dale were not done and with 1 minute on the clock, a quick break down the right resulted in a good finish which brought the final score to 2-2.
The result was a fair reflection of a match in which the spirited Dale outfit never allowed Selborne to settle comfortably. It was a good example of the many close contests that have marked Border schools hockey this season. In a year in which there have been 5 teams all capable on their day of beating the others, Selborne have done extremely well to remain unbeaten in Derby Day matches against local opposition.

Match Report: Selborne College 1st Hockey XI vs Hudson Park – 23 July 2011
But the Xerox Selborne College 1st X1 rose to the occasion to take the honours 3-2 in an exciting encounter marked by the positive and committed approach shown by both teams.
Selborne opened the scoring through Matthew Spanjaard, but within 2 minutes Hudson had levelled after some indifferent defending of a free-hit. Selborne regained the lead before half-time when Jason van Zyl rocketed an unstoppable drag-flick into the roof of the net.
Hudson again took advantage of hesitant defending to equalize early in the second half, but with 13 minutes to go, Jarryd Frauenstein put Selborne ahead by deflecting a cross from the left past the keeper. The home side then showed good composure and discipline to keep their lead safe to the end.

Match Report
After Selborne had taken an early lead through Jordan Hayes, the hard-working visitors kept the game on an even keel until late in the first half, when excellent finishes by Jarryd Frauenstein and Jason van Zyl put the home side clear at the break. In the second period, Cambridge seemed to lose their defensive pattern at times and this allowed Selborne to control proceedings throughout the half. Further field goals were added by Frauenstein and Matthew Spanjaard before van Zyl completed the scoring with a low drag-flick.
This was a good team display by Selborne against a school whose hockey is definitely on the up and are no longer the easy fixture they were a few years ago.

| Hockey Report - Selborne vs Stirling 4 August 2010 The Xerox Selborne 1st XI had to work hard to overcome the talented Stirling team before coming out on top in a match which featured some open flowing hockey with the result in doubt till the end. Selborne had a slight edge throughout but were often threatened by attacks launched by Stirling’s pacy and skilful midfield. The Selborne defence stood firm and broke down most of these sorties in the back third, which resulted in very few direct shots on their goal. The home side had far more genuine scoring opportunities, but a combination of poor decision-making and good goalkeeping led to most of these efforts coming to nothing. Selborne opened the scoring when Kyle Maguire efficiently finished an excellent midfield build-up by David Morgan and Andrew Buckley. Stirling equalized with a rather soft goal when an off-target shot was deflected in by a Selborne defender. The lead was restored when Jarryd Frauenstein scored from a well-executed corner variation. There was no further scoring in the second half and Selborne played out the closing minutes with composure to complete a 2-1 victory. |

| Hockey Report - Selborne vs Queens College 31 July 2010 The Xerox Selborne 1st XI bounced back from their earlier home defeat against Queen’s by recording a satisfying 3-1 away victory over their old rivals in a match played in testing berg-wind conditions Selborne dominated for most of the first half and went into the break with a 2-0 lead through goals by Jason van Zyl and Edan Allen. In the second period, Queen’s had a good period early on and reduced the deficit with a penalty corner goal. Selborne then re-asserted their control and put the result beyond doubt when Brad Hensberg put an unstoppable drag-flick into the top corner of the net. Although the energy-sapping weather made fluent hockey difficult to maintain, Selborne played with great determination and thoroughly deserved to come out on top. |

Hockey Report – Selborne vs Hudson Park High 23 July The Xerox Selborne 1st XI were in the unfamiliar position of underdogs against the highly-rated Hudson Park team. But they rose to the occasion with an outstanding first half performance, which produced a decisive 4-0 lead after only 20 minutes play. 2 field goals by Kyle Maguire in the opening 5 minutes set the tone and these were followed by a field goal from Jarryd Frauenstein, who then also finished a corner variation at the right post.
Hudson Park pulled a goal back just before the break and in the second half had the better of the game as Selborne allowed their standards to slip, turning the ball over far too often. It was only a number of fine saves by goalkeeper Liam Bassingthwaighte that prevented Hudson from reducing the deficit and enabled Selborne to complete a 4-1 victory, earned by the quality of their first half display. |

Selborne 1st Hockey XI Report vs Cambridge The Xerox Selborne 1st XI were dominant throughout the match against Cambridge High School.
After going 2-0 up at half-time through field goals by Russell Whittaker and Jarryd Frauenstein, Selborne added 3 more in the second half with penalty corners converted by Edan Allen and Jason van Zyl, plus a field goal from van Zyl. The Selborne defence efficiently controlled their opponents raids and Cambridge had only one shot on target, well dealt with by goalkeeper Liam Bassingthwaighte. Although Selborne had the great majority of territory and possession, the finishing could have been more clinical and a number of good scoring opportunities were wasted, which prevented the final tally accurately reflecting the run of play. |

Selborne then pulled themselves together and put in a much improved performance for the rest of the match. The teams were well-matched in midfield and the game was played at an intense pace with chances being created at both ends. There was no further scoring until the closing minutes when Grey added to their tally with a rather soft field goal and Selborne replied with a good finish by Edan Allen after a quick counter-attack to make the final score 3-1 to Grey.
The hockey was of a good standard with Grey having an overall edge, but Selborne should be complimented on recovering from their poor start to compete on even terms for the rest of the match.

Selborne College v Zimbabwe U17 – 18 February 2010
Selborne had a overwhelming share of possession and moved their opponents all around the field in the first half, going into a 2-0 lead at the break with goals by Jerryd Frauenstein and Jason van Zyl.
The pressure told on the Zimbabweans in the second period and Selborne added 6 further goals to their tally, with Frauenstein and van Zyl each scoring again, and Fred Clarke, Russell Whittaker, Edan Allen and Andrew Buckley all getting on the scoreboard as well, for a final result of 8-0 to Selborne.
Brad Hensberg has been selected for the SA U17 team that is playing in the Africa Qualifier for the Youth Olympics. The qualifying tournament is in East London from 21-28 February 2010.
2009 Hockey Season:

In 2005 I said it was a pleasure coaching hockey at Selborne. Four years later not much has changed. It has been great to have been a part of the journey of the hockey class of 2009. The bulk of the team has spent most of their high school hockey career together, so as far as pattern and knowing your team mates is concerned; this team was second to none.At the back with Darren Venter in goals and then Leonard Killeen, Nicholas Wiltshire, Daniel Schroeder and Angus Spence they were rock solid throughout the year. Jason Billingham was a more than adequate replacement when called upon. The links consisting of Robin Jones, Andrew Buckley, Jonty Craniey and Kyle Maguire were outstanding with regards to their work rate and their willingness to assist in defence and attack. The strikers in the squad were Jason Maclachlan, Richard Pautz and Adom Amoah. They all showed great enthusiasm and commitment throughout the season. Jason Randall, Brad Hensberg and Edan Allen also represented the team this year.
In the pre-season Border trials, things didn’t go our way. We lost to Port Rex and Hudson Park in a 20 minute one way festival. I think this was a great wake-up call for the team who had come off a great 2008 season. All of a sudden the work ethic and fire were ignited in the boys as we prepared for the very tough Nomads festival in Pretoria. Here the team was at its best. The boys played against five of the top hockey schools in South Africa and beat them all, conceding only 1 goal in all 5 matches. The 2009 first hockey team found out that the old adage “It’s tough at the top” is very true. Every Derby Day fixture was a titanic struggle. The opposition was always up for a big match, but fortunately for us so were the Selborne boys. Here I would like to compliment Robin and the senior boys on really preparing well for each and every match. The maturity the boys displayed, especially at the times when things were not going our way and the focus on what was controllable was fantastic.
Unfortunately the only blemish on an otherwise great season was the loss in our final match against Grey High (PE) - for some boys in the team, the only loss in five years at the college. In a way it was not that much of a crisis because in sport as in life, the only way one can grow or improve your character is to experience some form of disappointment.
Congratulations to the following boys who achieved awards this year:
Honours:
Robin Jones (SA Schools), Darren Venter (SA Schools), Richard Pautz (Border U18A), Angus Spence (Border U18A)
Colours:
Nicholas Wiltshire (Border U18A), Daniel Schroeder (Border U18A), Andrew Buckley (Border U18A) Jason Maclachlan (Border U18A), Jonty Craniey (Border U18B)
