2009 Cross Country Season:
The 2009 season started with the Berry Dam relay in Queenstown. We entered two teams. Our first team: Khanya Rumbu, Sibusiso Mbandazayo, Lunathi Skweyiya, Edan Allen, Joshua Chambers and Lazola Maqoma came third. Our second team: Migael du Preez, Matthew Mac Callum, Thando Matshaya, Sivuyile Ntete, Jason Strydom and Lloyd Edwards came seventh. The race was won by Queen’s College.
At the Inter-house Cross Country event Khanya won the open section and Lazola came second.
The U15 race was won by Migael and Zuhlume Sinuka came second. Perry House won with 652 points, Crewe second (647), Fuller third (609), Rees fourth (597) and Malcomess fifth (423). The fixture against Grey College was run on our usual course between Bonza Bay and Nahoon Beach. Khanya came second in this race and Lunathi fifth.
We hosted the Selborne Inter-schools’ Cross Country event. About 500 runners from all over East London and Queenstown attended. In the U14 race (4km) Migael was placed second and Matthew fourth. In the U17 race (6km) Lunathi was placed fifth and in the U19 race (6km) Lazola was placed first and Khanya second.
The Cambridge cross country race was used as trials for the Cape Schools’ Tournament held in the first part of the June school holidays. Cape Schools’ was hosted by SACS. It was undoubtedly the highlight of the season. The first race was in the Newlands forest over a distance of 9 km. Selborne came third behind Queen’s and Grey High. Khanya came third overall and Lazola sixth. The next race was run as a relay. This was the dream race. All six boys, Khanya, Lazola, Edan, Migael, Lloyd and Sibusiso ran the race of their lives. Selborne was placed second behind the hosts SACS. Queen’s came third. The last race was held on a very hilly course at a wine estate. Selborne was placed third behind Grey High and Queen’s. We also used this opportunity to meet up with some Old Boys in Cape Town. A trip to Simonstown to see the submarines and frigates made this tour unforgettable. Our special thanks go to Mr Max Norman for organizing this fine trip.
Other schools like Port Rex and Hudson Park also hosted some inter-schools’ cross country events. The Border Championships hosted by Kuswag Primary School was poorly attended due to the flu epidemic at the time.
