The dormitory refurbishing project has continued and the entire East wing is now complete. The refurbished dormitories have been fitted with new, larger lockers. Beds have had new surfaces fitted, floors have been sanded and varnished, walls and ceilings have been newly painted and new bed-side lamps and curtains have been fitted where necessary. Old Boys are welcome to sponsor the refurbishment of further dormitories. An ambitious project to reduce the hostel’s electricity consumption has been completed. Heat pumps and solar power panels have replaced all geysers. The walls of the freezer room have been metal plated and the extractor fans above the stove have been repaired. New outside benches and tables have been purchased for the hostel.

As usual, House members have made good use of the opportunities offered at the school. Four Honours awards were earned by Norton House men. Azhar Anwary, Bradley Vincent and Basanta Khatry-Chhetry hold awards for academic achievement, while Ncincilili Titi ’s award is for athletics. Titi became the fastest Selbornian in history when he recorded a time of 10,4 seconds for the 100 m sprint. Lwazi Volsak earned Colours for academic achievement, Josh van Rooyen and Siphesihle Punguzwa for rugby and Justin Langley for first aid. The school choir and first aid society were the most popular societies. Seven house members received Merit awards for choir and three for drama. James Bursey served on the School Governing Body and with Josh van Rooyen and Lwazi Volsak also served on the Learners’ Council. The best academic performance came from Basanta Khatry-Chhetry who was placed fourth in Grade 12. Jody Julies in Grade 9 and Bathandwa Mbadlanyana in Grade 8 also earned top 8 academic places. A further five house members earned Merit awards for academics, while six more earned first team awards for sport. Eight house members represented provincial squash teams. Lungelo Gosa and Abongile Nonkontwana were selected for a national u/16 rugby high performance squad. Alex Penhall represented the province in two sports at u/16 level and Hayden Worth at u/14 level. Oscar Kurten was the u/15 rugby player of the year. Seven house members received junior awards for sport or cultural activities and nine are set to do so for academics.
The hostel prefects proved to be particularly reliable this year and deserve thanks for their hard work. Congratulations to Bradley Vincent, James Bursey, Ncincilili Titi and Basanta Khatry-Chhetry on their Palma Virtuti Awards. For the second year running a member of the House was chosen as the exchange scholar to visit St Peter’s School in York. Siphesihle Zwane enjoyed his visit to foreign shores. Norton House is proud of Lwazi Volsak who is the incoming custodian of the key. It will be the first time since 2002 that a boarder is head prefect of the school. The highlight of the fourth term is always the Norton House Feast. This year the occasion was particularly meaningful as it was held on the last Friday evening that matrics would spend in hostel. The meal was as sumptuous as ever and the speeches and songs (particularly those of Emmanuel Meyer and Mr Paxton) rang true. The outstanding achievements of Basanta Khatry-Chhetry in academics and of Ncincilili Titi in sport were recognised. The prize for new pot spirit went to Simbulele Deli and for leadership to Bradley Vincent. The contribution of all who work at or support Norton House is much appreciated.
