Summary of 2011 Matric Results: 100% Pass Rate
The matric class of 2011 produced their normal healthy set of results in the NSC examinations. Not only did all candidates pass, but the quality of their passes was such that a pleasing 84% of them did so at the level required for entrance to a Bachelor’s degree.
Frank Sanan was the school’s top candidate. He achieved distinctions for all 8 of his subjects at an average of over 93%. Rahul Sajeev achieved 7 distinctions. He scored 97% for 4 of his subjects and averaged over 90%. Basanta Khatry-Chhetry achieved 7 distinctions while Jason Byrne, Sean Fitzpatrick and Anoop Nair achieved 6 distinctions.
Azhar Anwary, Mark Chiu, Michael Johnson, Freddy Lubbe, Daniel van der Merwe and Tshepile Tlali achieved 5 distinctions, while a further 6 candidates achieved 4 distinctions. The best performances in individual subjects were the 97% scored by Frank Sanan and Rahul Sajeev in Mathematics, by Tshepile Tlali and Rahul Sajeev in Accounting and by Rahul Sajeev in Physical Science and Mathematics paper 3 as well as the 95% scored by Mark Chiu in Engineering Graphics and Design, by Tshepile Tlali and Anoop Nair in Mathematics and by Frank Sanan in History and Physical Science.
This year Engineering Graphics and Design must take pride of place as regards subject performances. The average in this subject was 73% and 18 candidates (43% of the class) achieved distinctions. The 39 distinctions in Life Orientation, 18 in Mathematics and 16 in History also represent significant proportions of the classes, while a noteworthy number of distinctions were also produced in Life Sciences (14), Physical Sciences (11) and Afrikaans (12). IsiXhosa, Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation and History join EGD with an average over 70%, while Mathematics (65%), Physical Sciences (64%), English, Accounting and Life Sciences produced averages over 60%. As there is national concern about Mathematics passes, it is worth noting that Selborne’s pass rate in this subject was 100%. The school also accounted for more than 10% of the province’s passes in the extra Mathematics paper 3.
Selborne Maths Department Scores an "A"
The Selborne College Maths Department has for a number of years been sponsored by the Optima and Epoch Trusts. The funds were used to upgrade and equip all Maths classrooms with the necessary technological aids. A detailed annual assessment of the department is done by the sponsors. This includes pass rates, results, proportion of candidates taking Maths, participation in optional & advanced courses, Olympiad results, achievement of targets and utilisation of funds.
The latest "report card" gives Selborne an "A". Particularly pleasing is the fact that Selborne scored 100% in the category which evaluates results, participation in Maths paper 3 and utilisation and management of funds.
Mintek Science Quiz 13 May 2011: The Mintek Science Quiz was held in Port Elizabeth on 13th May 2011. It included all the schools from the Eastern Cape. Selborne College was one of five schools who qualified to compete in the finals. Congratulations to the team: Frank Sanan; Rahul Sajeev and Eric Isemonger for winning the Trophy for Top School.
100% Matric Pass rate for 2010!
Selborne College is pleased to announce a 100% matric pass rate. 82% of the Selborne Matrics attained University entrance levels. A total of 197 subject A’s was attained with 2 pupils getting 7 A’s, 4 pupils getting 6 A’s and 6 pupils getting 5 A’s. Five pupils also received A aggregates for a Advanced Mathematics paper.
The overall average percentage for various subjects was also very high, the best being a 79% average for history, 74% average for Life Orientation, 70% for Mathematics and a 70% average for music. A further 5 subjects had averages in the 60% plus range.

Academics 2009 by Mr Max Norman, Head of Academics
The first Grade 12 class to write the new NSC examinations was a particularly strong class. The 124 candidates in the class of 2008 met their goals and produced excellent results. The class achieved a 100% overall pass rate and 80% of the class passed at the level required for admission to a bachelor’s degree course. There were 190 subject distinctions of which 44 were for Life Orientation, 35 for Mathematical Literacy, 30 for Mathematics, 18 for Life Sciences, 14 each for Geography and Accounting, 13 for Afrikaans, 11 for History, 5 for each of Physical Sciences and EGD, 2 for English and 1 for isiXhosa.
Particularly impressive was the fact that 12 candidates achieved over 90% for Mathematics, with Sean O’Halloran scoring 99% and David Russell and Pratik Pokharel both 98%. Subject averages achieved by the class were healthy, with Mathematical Literacy (80%), Mathematics (76%), Life Orientation (73%) and Accounting (70%) leading the way.
The averages for Life Sciences and Geography were both 66%, History was 65%, Music was 69% and isiXhosa was 64%. EGD and Physical Sciences were both 59%, while English and Afrikaans were both 57%. Pratik Pokharel was the top candidate in the district, achieving over 90% on average. Both he and Bithun Babu achieved distinctions for 6 subjects. Ian Lang and Sean O’Halloran achieved distinctions for all 7 of their subjects. There were also 7 candidates who achieved distinctions for 5 subjects and 8 who achieved distinctions for 4 subjects. There were 16 candidates
who scored over 80% on average. The 147 candidates of the 2009 Grade 12 class make it the biggest matric class ever at Selborne. These candidates’ performance in the fi nals will be watched with interest. Results throughout the school have improved steadily during the year. All grades again wrote third term examinations.
We feel that this practice had a positive infl uence on fi nal results last year and will do so again this year.
