Summary of 2011 Matric Results: 100% Pass Rate

The matric class of 2011 produced their normal healthy set of results in the NSC examinations. Not only did all candidates pass, but the quality of their passes was such that a pleasing 84% of them did so at the level required for entrance to a Bachelor’s degree.

Frank Sanan was the school’s top candidate. He achieved distinctions for all 8 of his subjects at an average of over 93%. Rahul Sajeev achieved 7 distinctions. He scored  97%  for 4 of his subjects and averaged over 90%. Basanta Khatry-Chhetry achieved 7 distinctions while Jason Byrne, Sean Fitzpatrick and Anoop Nair achieved 6 distinctions.


Azhar Anwary, Mark Chiu, Michael Johnson, Freddy Lubbe, Daniel van der Merwe and Tshepile Tlali achieved 5 distinctions, while a further 6 candidates achieved 4 distinctions. The best performances in individual subjects were the 97% scored by Frank Sanan and Rahul Sajeev in Mathematics, by Tshepile Tlali and Rahul Sajeev in Accounting and by Rahul Sajeev in Physical Science and Mathematics paper 3 as well as the 95% scored by Mark Chiu in Engineering Graphics and Design, by Tshepile Tlali and Anoop Nair in Mathematics and by Frank Sanan in History and Physical Science.

This year Engineering Graphics and Design must take pride of place as regards subject performances. The average in this subject was 73% and 18 candidates (43% of the class) achieved distinctions. The 39 distinctions in Life Orientation, 18 in Mathematics and 16 in History also represent significant proportions of the classes, while a noteworthy number of distinctions were also produced in Life Sciences (14), Physical Sciences (11) and Afrikaans (12). IsiXhosa, Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation and History join EGD with an average over 70%, while Mathematics (65%), Physical Sciences (64%), English, Accounting and Life Sciences produced averages over 60%. As there is national concern about Mathematics passes, it is worth noting that Selborne’s pass rate in this subject was 100%. The school also accounted for more than 10% of the province’s passes in the extra Mathematics paper 3.
